AN EVENING OF CELEBRATION FOR NETBALL IN OUR COUNTY The county's netball community came together last Friday evening (6th May) at the University of Gloucestershire for the traditional annual presentation evening to award all the cups and trophies from the year's competitions. A total of 21 junior awards and 22 senior awards were presented by four specially invited VIP guests: Anita Navin, Ella Powell-Davies, Denise Egan and Gilly Salter. Navin is Head of School for Sport and Exercise at the University and also commentates on netball for Sky Sports. She gave an opening address, saying: "we have such a wealth of netballing talent in the county and it is only right that we celebrate that. Many congratulations to all the winners this evening!" Powell-Davies is vice-captain of Team Bath NPL and recently played in England's European U17 Championship winning side in Gibraltar. She presented a number of the evening's junior awards. There was celebration of netball players from the county that have achieved success at a national level, including Under-16 team Hucclecote Flames who on 1st May finished 6th in the National Under-16 finals in Newcastle. Two special awards were made to club volunteer of the year Vicki Wood and county volunteer of the year Andrew Taylor. Wood has played a central role in Cheltenham-based club United over recent years and was instrumental in them receiving a national sports club accreditation. Taylor, whose daughters are all involved in netball, is local club Hucclecote's media officer and took all the photos during this year's evening. This year's presentations were made on the eve of the Netball Superleague grand finals at the Copper Box in London. Local-representatives Team Bath finished 3rd overall this season, and the top spot was secured in the dying seconds by Surrey Storm, beating Manchester Thunder 55-53.
